5 Ways to Wake-up (the Ayurvedic way)

Want to begin your day feeling more fresh and invigorated? Ayurveda is an ancient Indian medicine system gaining momentum in the global wellness world.  Translated as ‘knowledge of life’, Ayurveda is essentially a preventative healthcare system based on the principles of nature, and the benefits are many. With the reopening of our Indian flagship resort, Haathi Mahal in Goa, here’s 5 simple tips on how to create your own Ayurvedic morning routine ‘dinacharya’ – to help regulate your body clock, improve digestion and circulation, as well as boost your happiness and self-esteem.

Awaken with a positive Mind

Try to wake before sunrise. Lie in bed for a few minutes and absorb the energy of the day ahead. Meditate, express gratitude, or just think about people and things that make you feel happy – these positive morning thoughts will set the tone for your day ahead.

Invest in a copper tongue scraper

A tongue scraper is one of the most important tools for your Ayurvedic kit. They are commonly used to remove any undigested materials that coat the tongue overnight, kill microbes and prevent bad breath.  After scraping your tongue a few times, brush your teeth, and drink a glass or two of warm water and/or warm ginger tea. Splash your face with water a few times. Daily nasal therapy is also recommended to clear your sinuses – consult an Ayurvedic practitioner to help you develop your nasal therapy regime.

Daily Abhyanga body massage

Apply warm sesame or coconut oil to your body and give yourself a vigorous self-massage to wake up your body. Massaging warm oil into your skin will help boost blood flow and improve lymph flow and circulation through your body.  Regular massage also nourishes and improves skin tone– a win win! Try to leave the oil on for 30-minutes,  then rinse with warm water under a shower or in a bath. You’ll feel great!

Pre-Workout Stretches

Roll out your mat and do a few simple yoga stretches. It’s such an effective way to keep your body elongated as well as cultivate a tall and poised posture. A few minutes of meditation at the end will help get you inspired for the day ahead.

 Move, Move, Move

Try to integrate 45 minutes of exercise into your morning routine. This could be an extended yoga practice, a game of tennis, a brisk walk around the neighborhood or a HIT class at the gym. Try and mix it up so you do all types of exercise throughout the week.
