Digital de-stress: tips for switching off and tuning out

Digital de-stress: tips for switching off and tuning out

In an always-on, hyperconnected world it pays to put away the device, for happiness sake.

There are signs that the information age has a real downside when it comes to our wellbeing.

Global health organisations, GPs, and community leaders are increasingly concerned that a combination of constant digital connection, and designed-for-addiction devices, are contributing to a depression and anxiety epidemic. The solution, it seems, is to disconnect. When the Oxford dictionary adds ‘digital detox’ to the vernacular, you know we have a problem.

The rise of the machines

Smartphones and other devices have become our constant companions; in our bags, our pockets and beside our beds. These “helpful” tools bombard us with information 24/7, ensuring we don’t miss out on a single thing happening with our friends, our work, and the world at large.

The globe’s largest corporations have started to request employees leave their devices at work when going on holiday, while community centres such as sports and gym facilities are enforcing digital-free zones, encouraging patrons to “check in” their phones before working out.

Food comes home at Karma Kandara

Food comes home at Karma Kandara

If you were brought up in Motor City (Detroit) during the 70s and 80s, there’s a fairly good chance you might have ended up in the automotive industry. Karma Kandara’s guest food consultant, Joseph Antonishek, was no exception. His original plan was to become an industrial designer and help turn out a new generation of cars for American motorists but in the end, he embraced another type of design.

A stint at the Culinary Institute of America learning his craft replaced engineering and within a few short years, Joseph was named as one of the “Best hotel chefs in America” by the prestigious James Beard Foundation. What followed was a peripatetic careers in the Big Apple and Los Angeles before he found his way to Asia and Bali which he now calls home.

Joseph’s arrival at Karma Kandara coincides with high-season and he’s looking forward to delivering hotel and restaurant guests an extraordinary culinary experience.

It’s all about me in the morning

It’s all about me in the morning

Mornings can be rather hectic and stressful. We oversleep, skip breakfast, and rush to get to work on time. Alternatively, we might pick up our phones and start scrolling through emails while worrying about what we might have missed or fret about getting the kids to school or making their lunches. According to a growing body of scientific opinion, a stressful start to the day can have a significant impact on your mental and physical well-being not to mention work productivity.

Taking into account how hard it is to get the morning ritual right, we decided to profile a number of famous faces on how they prepare for the day ahead. It would seem getting up early mixed with some exercise and introspection could be the key to getting things on the right track. Put simply: your mornings should be all about “me” or you as our celebrity profiles illustrate below:

Looking for a hat-trick: Chef Mike Potts shares his vision for a three-Rosette restaurant

Looking for a hat-trick: Chef Mike Potts shares his vision for a three-Rosette restaurant

Chef Mike Potts is a man on a mission. The Executive Chef of Karma’s Isles of Scilly resort, Karma St Martin’s, has just secured the resort’s signature restaurant, The Cloudesley Shovell, a prestigious two-rosettes, awarded by the UK’s Automotive Association which recognises excellence where – as the AA puts it – the top and the bottom line is food. To be awarded two-rosettes, a restaurant is recognised as the best in their local area, and which aims for (and achieves) higher standards, better consistency, greater precision in cooking, and evident attention to the selection of quality ingredients.

Not satisfied with a mere two-Rosettes, Potts has an eye on next year’s AA judging round, when he hopes to add a third to the restaurant’s trophy shelf. Indeed, it’s not Potts’s first time as a multiple Rosette winner; he also collected three-Rosettes back in 2004 as chef for the Queen Hotel in Chester.
