Cancer Council’s Karma Resorts Rottnest Channel Swim team all in for a good cause.

Rottnest Channel Swim

“Most times we’ve seen each other when we’re not wearing very much, but thanks to training we’ve finally seen what everyone looks like in clothes!” laughs Allison Hass, team leader of the Cancer Council of WA’s Karma Resorts Rottnest Channel Swim team, as we chat about their involvement in the 2017 Karma Resorts Rottnest Channel Swim.

As part of Karma Resort’s sponsorship of the event, the global luxury resorts brand donated a full team place to the Cancer Council of WA, helping to raise vital funds for cancer research and to support sufferers and their families.

Allison says the team was lucky to be given the opportunity to fund-raise for a good cause, as they’ve seen the impact the disease can have firsthand.

Even before they joined together for the Karma Resorts Rottnest swim, the group had trained regularly together at the Perth City Swim Club.

The swimming surgeon – A Karma Resorts Rottnest Channel Swim story.

By day, Dieter Gebauer is Clinical Associated Professor and Head of Oral & Maxillofacial surgery at Royal Perth Hospital. He’s a devoted and caring father and has also been nominated in the People’s Choice “40 under 40” for his work and singular entrepreneurial spirit in his field.

And that’s perhaps not even the most interesting thing about him. Associate Professor Gebauer is also well known in swimming circles as a multi-time winner of the world-famous Karma Resorts Rottnest Channel Swim.

“My father used to be a submariner back in World War II”, quips Gebauer over the phone from his office at Perth Royal Hospital, “so he really pushed swimming as something important to learn – he definitely got me started”.

“The Karma Resorts Rottnest Channel Swim has a long history of medical professionals participating but I started competing from a very young age.

Richie Strahan

As the super-fit star of last year’s edition of Channel 10’s rom-reality show The Bachelor Australia, Richie Strahan is already well-known to Australian TV viewers.

In a recent exclusive chat at Karma’s uber-relaxed Rottnest Island Resort, Strahan spoke excitedly about his new role as the Ambassador for 2017’s Karma Resorts Rottnest Channel Swim and about completing the grueling 19.7 kilometer event as well as his love of the holiday island which lies just off the coast of Western Australia.

According to Strahan, “just coming out (of the water) onto that beach (at race end) was such an extraordinary feeling.”

A passionate Western Australian local, Strahan says growing up in the West was a privilege as it gave him access to a wealth of natural wonders, including “Rotto”, as locals warmly refer to Rottnest Island.

“I remember as a kid it was always BBQs on the beach and then we’d have dinner at the Rottnest Pub with my parents.

Siren of the Sea

Keiko Uno

If the ocean could speak, what would it say?

Once its first powerful enchantment is cast, it holds us forever captive, the very embodiment of emotion. And yet, it often resists all of our attempts to define it with words.

Keiko Uno – a descendant of Japanese Samurai lords, who grew up on the beaches of Australia – has given the ocean a voice through her exquisite limited-edition jewellery creations. Each one of Keiko’s eloquent hand-crafted pieces tells a story. Recalls a potent memory or moment, inspired by the freedom, energy and timeless mystery of the sea. Take her splendidly-curvaceous “Coral” ring, part of her luxury Ocean Intrigue Collection.

For Keiko, the alluring 18 karat gold statement piece, which features diamonds with black rhodium, is a permanent reminder of both her surf-worshipping husband and Balagan Beach, an idyllic surfing spot on the Bukit Peninsula in Bali, near Karma’s flagship resort Karma Kandara.
