Pillars, Buddhas & Monsoons: The Inthakin Festival in Chiang Mai

Pillars, Buddhas & Monsoons: The Inthakin Festival in Chiang Mai

According to ancient Thai tradition, the pillar, or inthakin, constitutes the foundation stone around which a city is built, meaning it is of utmost importance in their culture. That is why in Chiang Mai the pillar of Wat Chedi Luang, which designates the historic city center, is venerated in the spectacular annual Inthakin Festival – a celebration unique to the mountainous city.

This unique worship ritual and celebration, which takes place on the 12th day of the sixth lunar month each year, lasts eight days and this year takes place between 11th-17th May. Centered around the Wat Chedi Luang temple, rich offerings are laid before the city pillar and the Buddhist and Lanna-era icons housed there with singular devotion.

On the first day of the festival, a Buddhist image of Phra Fon Saen Haa (The Five-Hundred Thousand Raindrop Buddha) is paraded around old town where the faithful line the streets to sprinkle lustral water (Nam Som Poi) on it.

Go Wild In The Isles Of Scilly

Go Wild In The Isles Of Scilly

This Isles of Scilly is fast establishing itself as a niche destination unlike anywhere else in the British Isles, thanks in no small part to its nature offerings…

The Isles of Scilly have been designated “An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty” since 1975 and no wonder – the archipelago offers a rich and varied tapestry of landscapes and seascapes – from woodlands to wetlands, rocky headlands to windswept heaths, coral reefs to white sand beaches lapped by water the colour of the Mediterranean.

Spring tends to come early to the Isles of Scilly thanks to the influence of the Gulf Stream making April a great time to visit the islands. The heaths and moorland are filled with spring flowers, and scented narcissi flower along the islands’ maze of hedgerows. It’s also a great time for fascinating wildlife encounters as migratory bird species return to the islands.

SANUR – Bali’s East Coast Evergreen Is A Sleeper Hit!

SANUR – Bali’s East Coast Evergreen Is A Sleeper Hit!

Sanur on Bali’s south east coast has long held a reputation as offering visitors a rather more tranquil experience than its west coast cousins, Seminyak, Legian, Kuta and now the latest hipster hangout, Canggu.

And yet it wasn’t always so – Sanur has its own storied history. In the seventies & eighties, Kuta was about as backwater as you can get – just a somnolent little fishing village – while it was Sanur where everything was happening. And we mean happening. Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall tied the knot there, David Bowie was a frequent visitor as were Yoko Ono and Sting.
Some of the venerable institutions that entertained them rare still going strong in Sanur – most notable among them probably the famous Kafe Batu Jimbar, which is well worth a visit for its tasty Indonesian dishes.

In contrast to Bali’s west coast, which is habitually lashed by big ocean rollers, Sanur’s placid beach front is ideal for bathing as well as for watersports like windsurfing.

Jamu: Indonesia’s Best Kept Health Secret

Jamu: Indonesia’s Best Kept Health Secret

Jamu is a holistic healing therapy that’s based on the theory that if our ailments come from nature, then so too, must their cure. Originating on the island of Java many centuries ago, and used by local Balinese healers, the traditionally Indonesian herbal cure comes in forms of tablet, powder or as a locally brewed drink.

Revered in Indonesia for it’s medicinal superpowers, Jamu is slowly becoming a fixture on the health scene in the Western World. In fact, on Wednesday at our nutritional workshop which is being held as part of Karma Wellness week, we ran through a comprehensive list of the health benefits of Jamu and all enjoyed a glass of the nutritional beverage. The workshop was run by the Pilates instructor to the England 7’s Rugby, and an enjoyable, informative experience.

But it’s not just the ingredients that make Jamu the healing superpower it is.
