The Alpen Club in Schiliersee is a wonderful location, we had a fantastic week even though the weather was rather miserable with rain throughout, however it didn't spoil things. We rocked up on the Saturday afternoon on 2 motorbikes just before the heavens emptied onto us, it poured down!! After travelling for a couple of days from Amsterdam through Germany we were met by a happy chappy our Odyssey sales rep Chris Kindred, it wasn't planned he just happened to be on his way to the lake festival that weekend and was debating the weather, so we had a nice chat whilst getting the luggage of the bike. Into the reception for another very warm greeting and the loan of their luggage trolley, its amazing the luggage you can get on a bike!! The reception was light and airy with access to the restaurant that did daily specials, bar for fantastic cocktails, cool swimming pool with cascading waterfall and well stocked games room with skittles, pool and darts amongst other things.
Our bikes were well looked after so we set off with our trolley rattling to our apartment and was very happy to arrive to a very spacious and well equipped property on the ground floor just outside the main hotel complex with stunning views across the countryside and mountains. The bedroom was very spacious with a wonderful extra large king size bed and large bathroom, a small kitchen area divided the bedroom and the lounge which had sofa bed, stereo, DVD, TV and Free Wi-Fi for us members and a much needed and used shower room off of this. The kitchen was well stocked with 2 hobs and a microwave, we managed a couple of good meals when we didn't go out.
The location was superb, apart from the stunning lush scenery surrounded by mountains there was a lovely lake to explore, we spent about 4 hours walking around, great for fish, tree and plant enthusiasts as there is a wealth of information as you walk around. Plenty of outside woodland activities to play around with the family and seats for those just wanting to contemplate and take a breather whilst taking in the beautiful sites. There is places along route to dip your toe in or those braver souls to have a swim, and to recharge your batteries a wealth of pubs and restaurants as you head back to the resort, all reasonably priced. We took a horse and carriage ride around the neighbouring villages, its a great way to explore the area and kids and adults will really enjoy. There are a couple of supermarkets within a 10 minute stroll and a dedicated beer supermarket!! :-)
Schliersee is also a great location to travel from, the train station is just across the road 5 mins away with great links into Munich and beyond, also the buses are very regular and you can get a free pass around the local villages, so if you don't have a car its not a problem, it takes just under an hour from Munich to Schliersee. We met up with another couple from Milton Keynes, had a great couple of days out with them as the weather was horrid to be on a bike and we visited Bad Tolz, very pretty town and Innsbruck a 45 min journey into Austria, stunning place. When the sun did come out it was breath-taking, the scenery really is to die for and the air is so clean, we found ourselves sleeping very well indeed.
Shopping, locally is very good 2 supermarkets both very reasonable and a beer supermarket, nice...... there is a fantastic bakers for fresh bread in the mornings and some wonderful gift shops, but for bigger shopping get the train for stress free shopping and to see the food market, it has plenty of beer and wine stops too, very important in Germany, we loved the place.
The Alpen club is great for all, those wanting a relaxing or full on active, hiking, biking break, you can cram so much in and keen motorcyclists we can really recommend the roads are great.
We are looking forward to returning with our 19 year old daughter next year to do a spot of skiing and now having explored in July the husband will be very happy in his bar with the locals whilst we try our hand and luck at not breaking a bone on the slopes. See there is something for everyone!!
Thank you Chris and all the staff at the Alpen Club for helping make it a great break, looking forward to seeing you next year without the bikes…
Best regards
Sue and John McGrath
