Karma Reef protects namesake with coral propagation program

Gili Meno, Indonesia, As part of Karma’s continued commitment to sustainable tourism and the environment, the team at Karma Reef have commenced a collaboration with Reef Check Trainer and coral propagation specialist, Mimi Lorenzi.

Lorenzi, an associate of Sea Shepherd Dive and trained under the Ocean Quest coral reef propagation project, boasts ten years worth of experience working on marine ecology projects and has logged an astounding five-thousand dive hours.

Enthusiastic volunteers and guests were recently invited to Karma Reef for a coral propagation workshop. During the workshop, Lorenzi demonstrated the process by which coral polyps are first cut, then grafted to live rock to stimulate growth. According to Lorenzi, the wealth of marine life surrounding the Gili Islands – including the Green Sea Turtles, Manta Rays, and even the occasional Whale Shark – makes them an ideal location to help educate tourists and locals alike on the importance of coral reef health, and their place within the marine ecosystem.

“People who come here see how the process works, and the results it can produce. It’s incredibly important because when they (tourists) leave, they take the knowledge with them and share the story of how important corals are to the health of our oceans, as well as the knowledge of how to propagate and rehabilitate reefs around the world”, says Lorenzi.
