We kicked off the new year feeling recharged with the launch of our global sustainable vision for 2020!

How good was Karma’s 12 Days of Karma festivities this season – our re-imagined Karma Beach Bali certainly raised the bar higher to be Bali’s ultimate beach destination. All this plus inspiring wellness trends to discover and romantic getaways to explore….

Message from the Chairman

Watching the terrible scenes of devastation surrounding the australian bush fires, and seeing so many humans and animals deeply affected, it really focuses one’s mind on the reality of rapid climate change and what we can all do to help .

Clearly in the short term Karma will provide financial support to various charities , but in the longer term I am determined that we fully address issues of sustainability and look at ways we as individuals and as a company can help the environment

2020 will very much be a year when Karma Group strives to embark on a wide variety of sustainable initiatives… Indeed we will have a 2020 vision .

Internally I have asked Judy Chapman, our Karma Spa Curator, to assume the role of Karma‘s ‘Champion of Sustainability’ and I have asked her to look at all aspects of how we operate as a group and look at ways we can be more sustainable, help the environment and ‘touch the ground lighter‘. She will also be looking around the world at what other companies and groups are doing and to see if there are precedents we can follow.

I actually believe that sustainability and economic success are not mutually incompatible and indeed compliment each other perfectly.

I was extremely pleased to see during my recent family holiday stays at Karma Bavaria and Karma Kandara that we have already embarked on initiatives such as banning all plastic and using refillable water bottles etc. However these are only the tip of the iceberg.

I was recently teaching at YALE university and had the pleasure of working with Patrick Bellew, one of the world’s leading sustainable engineers, responsible for iconic and ground breaking projects such as the gardens by the bay in Singapore, and we will be working with him to see how we can design and construct new resorts in a more sustainable manner.

Climate change is not going away and I believe we all have a responsibility to do what we can to help and make a difference.

Please rest assured that Karma Group will strive to embrace as many positive initiatives as we can and will do what we can to build ,operate and manage a more sustainable and environmentally positive solution.

John Spence
Chairman

Going Green Good Karma

Karma Group is no stranger to being green, and we are pleased to announce the launch of a major green project. Our plan is to strengthen our focus on sustainability throughout all our resorts. One initiative is our goal to have 0% waste from plastic with water dispensers replacing all plastic water bottles. So far, at our flagship Karma Kandara resort, we will save 150,000 plastic bottles this year from ending up in landfill.

Island In The Sun -Karma Beach Bali has reopened

Step into our reimagined Karma Beach Bali that opened on the 20th of December 2019. It’s deconstructed luxe beach feel has been retained and is modern and sexy with tropical accents. Seating has been increased to 110 with expanded decking and beach-facing communal dining for larger groups. There is an emphasis on recycled and organic materials and revamped facilities and amenities include art deco furniture, swing chairs and more beach showers for your beach-to-bar journey. The new Karma Beach Bali has raised the bar higher, and is Bali’s ultimate beach destination.

‘Karma Beach Bali has long been synonymous with the Karma ideal of playing hard and relaxing harder in the most spectacular places on the planet”, says John Spence, Chairman and Founder of Karma Group. “We are excited to be taking this magical place to another level, whilst being careful to maintain the unique heart and soul that sets it apart from the rest.’

Cherish The Days

All over the world families, friends, guests and members joined us for our Christmas festivities at our various resorts. Highlights of our 12-days of Karma fun at Karma Kandara in Bali were our New Year’s Eve circus performances with a troupe of dancers, acrobats, and a roving magician. This was followed by a trio of the world’s best International DJs including Pete Gooding, Jon Sa Trinxa and Glaswegian house duo, Silicone Soul.

Another standout was the twice-daily yoga led by Karma’s very own Yoga Ambassador, Ola Lirka. At our seaside Yoga Bale, guests began the day with Ola’s inspiring Rise & Shine Karma Flow and at sunset enjoyed Slow Flow Yoga with Ola’s signature sound therapy.

THIS JUST IN : Ola Lirka will be back at Karma Kandara over Easter as will our Intuitive Tarot Reader Sylvia Galambos.

Sustainable Valentine’s Day Recipe: Chocolate Fondant

This year, we’re celebrating Valentine’s Day in a most sustainable way! Chef Joseph has created a sublime Chocolate Fondant created from locally sourced ethically grown ingredients including Valrhona Sakanti Bali Single Origin 68% cocoa! Since 1922, Valrhona has been producing the world’s finest chocolate in the small village of Tain L’Hermitage in France. In 2013, the team travelled to Bali in search of a high-quality cocoa connected with the Kerta Samaya Samaniya (KSS) cooperative in the Jemrana region in West Bali that is known for its quality cocoa, coffee and bananas. Today the KSS co-op consists of more than 400 cocoa producers creating a world-class dark chocolate.

Wellness Trends 2020

We ask Karma’s Spa & Wellness Curator, Judy Chapman, to highlight some of her favorite trends for 2020.

S IS FOR SUSTAINABILITY
The health and longevity of our planet is on many people’s radar and travelers are increasingly seeking out destinations that are eco-themed. In fact, a recent survey showed that nearly 70% of travelers reported they would spend at least 5% more on their accommodation to ensure their travel would have a reduced impact on the environment – that’s inspiring! Here at Karma Group we’ve launched our sustainability vision for 2020.

CONSCIOUS BEAUTY
Water is a limited resource and beauty brands are meeting the challenge. At Karma Spa on Rottnest Island, we partnered with Perth-based skincare brand, MOKOSH, because of their waterless formulations. That and their undeniable commitment to social and community projects. Says Judy: “Last year, they began raising funds to purchase trees to plant in the Yarra Yarra Biodiversity Corridor to provide habitat for endangered species – now that’s true beauty!”

HEALTH SPAN NOT JUST LIFE SPAN
Forget anti-aging. Now it’s all about aging well or maintaining our vitality as we grow older. Says Judy: “We are in an age where we are living longer than ever before, and at 50 years old, we are potentially only half way through our lives – that’s a game-changer!”

NATURAL MOVEMENT
‘Natural movement’ has been highlighted by the Global Wellness Institute in their 2020 Wellness Trends report. It’s inspired by the research that the longest living people on earth don’t necessarily keep fit by going to a gym but by moving naturally throughout the day and integrating physical activity into their daily lives.
